From The Preacher's Desk

A Riddle

Here is a riddle I once heard:

I am your constant companion. I am your greatest helper or heaviest burden.
I will push you onward or drag you down to failure.
I am completely at your command.
I am the servant of all great people, and, alas, of all failures, too.
Take me, train me, be firm with me, and I will place the world at your feet. Be easy with me and I will destroy you.
Who am I?

Answer: I am habit.

We all have habits—they can be good or bad. We must develop good habits and pass those on to our children. When it comes to attending church, praying and reading the Bible, the apple does not fall far from the tree. A recent Zogby poll of teens andtheir parents overwhelmingly confirms that parents have the most influence ontheir children’s religious activity. You see, the habits young people have regarding worship, follows almost directly in line with the habits of their parents.

What can we do? Fill your life with good habits. Look for yourself in the Bible, Titus 2:7,. "In all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility."

In reality you can’t break a bad habit, you must replace the habit with a new behavior. Paul explained this process of change when he addressed the Ephesian Church. He taught them: "Put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and… put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness" (Eph. 4:22-24). Notice that he encouraged them to put off one behavior by putting on a new one as they were spiritually renewed. Develop good habits like regular church attendance and Bible study. Model these for your children. Set the example. You won’t be disappointed by the outcome!

Rob and Debbie's Life Group

Rob and Debbie's Life Group met on Sunday evening, March 2nd. The theme for the evening was "Indoor Beach Party." (Believe it or not, the temps were in the 70's that day!)
A fun time was had by all! Congrats to Andrew Coker who won the "weather game" and the prize of an Arkansas Weather Kit: Gloves when its cold in March, a poncho when it rains in March, Mosquito spray for the kritters that bite in March, and sun screen for the sunny and warm days in March. You just never know what each day will bring...

Youth Basketball Awards

The award ceremonies and trophy presentations for the winter basketball program has begun, and will continue thru Sat., March 8th in the church gym. Here are some of the award presentations from yesterday. We had a standing room only crowd for some of the presentations, and I was not able to photograph all of them. We heard so many good comments about our program from the parents and family members who attended. Thanks to Ed Baker, who along with Chris Wall, and the coaches and volunteers made the basketball program possible.

Sunday Afternoon at the Church

Tell me what is better than attending church services on Sunday mornings, followed by watching your child/grandchild play basketball in a Christian setting? Look what you missed today:

If your child is in the program, we certainly invite you to come to any and all our services. You would be an honored guest.

Foster Parent Appreciation Dinner

On Thursday, February 28th we hosted an Appreciation Dinner for all Lawrence County Foster Parents. The group uses our facilities for their monthly meetings, and we thought it would be nice to say "Thank-You" to them for the work they do helping neglected and abused children here. (For privacy concerns, we are not showing photos of the foster children themselves.)

Here is the President of the local Foster Parenting group and his wife. We appreciate what your group does~ as a parent of an adopted child myself, I especially want to note their hard work does not go unnoticed!
