From The Preacher's Desk

Growing Tomatoes

Do you have a garden this year? I have attempted to grow tomatoes for the past three years, but with limited success. My grandfather planted his tomatoes the same time I did. His tomato plants are so tall, you have to stand on a ladder to pick the ripe tomatoes! Mine, on the other hand, are about a foot tall. I have one plant that has three pea-sized tomatoes on it
Planting gardens can save you money, however William Alexander, the author of
The $64 Tomato learned gardening can be expensive. He writes about spending $16,565 building the perfect garden and $735 maintaining it for one year. Amortizing the initial costs over 20 years, adding this year's expenses and dividing the result among all his produce, he figured his tomatoes cost $64 apiece.

Speaking for myself, I have long given up of the dreams of harvesting baskets of tomatoes, and I no longer sit around creating lists of friends I want to present jars of salsa I made from my tomatoes. Right now I’m just glad to get an occasional tomato to make myself a side salad!

The bottom line is this: It takes work to make a good garden. It takes effort to do anything right—to be a good Christian we must work diligently at it every day.

In the Great Commission, we are reminded of the expectation for Christian growth. Jesus did not simply tell his disciples to baptize (Matthew 28:19-20), he said, …“teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.” He wanted them to follow-up on those who were baptized. You see, Christian growth helps us to be stronger—we are less likely to drift back into the world.

We must demonstrate our faithfulness through our faithful attendance in church (Heb.10:24-25) and our faithful living daily. Let’s bear fruit for the Lord
